As part of the 1st Brazilian Black History Month, the artistic initiative Racines Cor d’Anil, in collaboration with the non-profit organization Maison de l’Amitié, presents three Saturdays of immersive programming at the heart of Afro-Brazilian cultures and history.
On February 14, starting at 4 p.m., the public is invited to discover a rich and welcoming program featuring a Brazilian film screening, a Portuguese-language book exchange, a language speed-dating activity, and a Brazilian culinary experience by Chef Daiana Santos of Bouchées Brésil. The evening continues with a Brazilian chorinho concert presented by Mirtes Teixeira. Visitors will also be able to discover the visual exhibition Racines Cor d’Anil, in which photographer Renata Carmo highlights the journeys and stories of Black Brazilian immigrants in Quebec.
On February 21, starting at 4 p.m., the day begins with a presentation on the Transatlantic Slave Trade, explored through data visualization by Danilo Sanches, followed by a discussion with the audience. In the evening, the focus shifts to movement with introductory workshops in samba de gafieira, led by Dani Castro, and capoeira Angola, led by Gelton Cruz. The Portuguese-language book exchange and the Racines Cor d’Anil exhibition will accompany these activities.
To close the month, on February 28, creation, dialogue, and celebration take center stage. The program begins at 3 p.m. with an empowerment workshop through writing in Portuguese, guided by Emmanuella Feix, followed by a roundtable discussion bringing together Brazilian artists Ney Wendel, Nakita Hannah, and Renata Carmo, as well as Haitian multidisciplinary artist Sendy-Loo Emmanuel, also founder of the organization WECAN. A drag queen performance by Muz’Emma and a large roda de samba will conclude the day in a festive atmosphere. The book exchange and the Racines Cor d’Anil exhibition will also be featured.
An event open to all, celebrating the richness of Lusophone Black cultures in Montreal.
