Anthony Présumé’s pictorial practice explores space as both a physical territory and an interior landscape, a place where the search for truth and the sensitive experience of being unfold. Each work invites a slowing of the gaze, a subtle shift that allows one to approach the interplay between material presence and withdrawal, where the self seeks its own resonance.
Rooted in Haitian cultural imaginaries, his approach draws on a profound memory shaped by the heritage of Vodou, creation narratives, and the intimate relationship between humans, ancestors, and symbolic spaces. The cave emerges as a foundational motif, philosophical, mythical, and sensorial at the same time. It materializes shadow, granting it density and voice, and opens a passage toward what lies beyond the visible. References to the Platonic cave, to primordial dwellings, and to the initiatory spaces found within Haitian cosmology form the basis of an ontological inquiry into what it means to exist in the world.
Through a poetics of shadow and silence, the artist seeks to reveal the more sensitive dimensions of human dwelling, where memory, spirituality, and presence converge to create new spaces of perception and meaning.
