On the occasion of Black History Month, the LGBTQ+ Community Center of Montreal, in collaboration with the Massimadi Foundation, is proud to present an art exhibition highlighting the stories and works of Afro'Queer artists. This project aims to celebrate the richness of multiple identities by bringing together artists who have recently arrived in Montreal and those who are established in the city.
Focusing on the narratives that shape identities, the exhibition will bring together visual artists selected to explore, through their work, the formative narratives of their Afro'Queer identities. Inspired by Audre Lorde's words to James Baldwin: “Nobody was dreaming about me. Nobody was even studying me except as something to wipe out,” this event offers a unique artistic reflection on the celebration of plural identities.
At the same time, this event marks the launch of the Afro'Queer collection within our Bibliothèque à livres ouverts (BALO), a unique documentation center specializing in issues of sexual diversity. This collection will help enrich our resources with works dedicated to Afro'Queer narratives, creating a space for dialogue and discovery.
This project represents a unique opportunity to shed light on stories that are often marginalized, and to raise the profile of Afro-queer artists in the Montreal artistic landscape, while fostering bonds of solidarity between members of the community.
A free circulation exhibition will take place on February 26, followed on February 27 by an evening event in honor of the artists.
The ticketing link will soon be posted on our social networks.
