Mélanie Demers combines theater, dance, and engaged speech! By cleverly subverting representations of everyday racism present in popular imagination, the performers reclaim iconic scenes from theater, cinema, and television, from Shakespeare to monologues in Spike Lee's films.
"Since it's impossible to escape our bodies, why not honor this condition, this identity, this burden, this beauty? With this playground offered to us, both cotton field and circus arena, between essay and cabaret, we dive in with eyes closed, fists raised. We play with clichés, folklore, and prejudices. We let the discourse build and contradict itself. We observe how a bodily envelope has the power to sharpen instincts and dictate destinies. Cabaret Noir is a profane and sacred space to demand the right to speak, to tell our stories, to invent ourselves, and ultimately, not to be defined by any authority."
