“My Star, My Heritage” is a vibrant workshop that uses the story Ika, a Star Like No Other to spark an essential conversation about identity, pride in being different, and resilience.
The book, written by Haitian-Quebecois author Anne Marleine Delcy, a certified emotional health coach, tells the story of Ika, who feels different and must embark on a journey to discover her inner light.
For Black History Month, the workshop places a special emphasis on:
Heritage as a Source of Strength
Using Ika’s journey to explore how strength comes from our roots, our families, and our cultural and personal differences.
Identity Pride
Transforming “difference” — the fact that Ika does not shine like the others — into a “unique light” worth celebrating, helping young people value their individuality in connection with their identity.
Voice and Expression
Encouraging children to speak up and express pride in who they are and in the qualities they have inherited from those who came before them.
